Discover Mussoorie: Queen of Hill Stations
Mussoorie, perched at 2,005 metres on a ridge of the Garhwal Himalayas, has earned its title “The Queen of the Hills” over nearly two centuries. The British discovered Mussoorie in 1827, and the town rapidly became one of the most fashionable summer retreats in the empire — its crisp air, spectacular Himalayan and Doon Valley views, and lively social scene making it a destination unlike any other in India.
The town's famous Mall Road is one of the most charming promenades in all of India — a ridge-top walk lined with colonial-era hotels, restaurants, and shops, flanked on one side by sheer drops into the Doon Valley and on the other by steep forested hillsides. The Gun Hill viewpoint (accessible by cable car or a 20-minute walk) offers the most spectacular panorama of the Garhwal Himalayan range, including Bandarpunch and Swargarohini.
Mussoorie has deep literary connections. It was home to the beloved author Ruskin Bond for decades — his home at Landour Bazaar is a pilgrimage site for Indian literature lovers, and the author is often spotted at the Cambridge Book Depot on Mall Road. The Landour district of Mussoorie, a quieter cantonment area slightly above the main town, preserves the most intact colonial character — its stone bungalows, ancient deodar trees, and flagstone lanes feel unchanged from the Raj era.
The Kempty Falls (15 km from Mussoorie) is one of the most visited waterfalls in Uttarakhand, cascading in multiple steps through a rocky gorge — particularly spectacular after the monsoon. The Lake Mist (6 km) and Company Garden are popular picnic spots. The Dhanaulti hill station (24 km from Mussoorie) offers quieter apple orchards and forest dak bungalows for those seeking respite from Mussoorie's crowds.
